Comic Logos
Custom type, dramatic lettering, curated comic branding: a showcase of comic logos.
Tommy Gun Wizards
I had an absolute blast creating this logo. I love diving into historical typography, so this project was a treat. I had so much creative freedom with my concepts. Tommy Gun Wizards (later called Machine Gun Wizards) is set in the 1920’s where gangsters use magic, and prohibition of magic is the law. Writing and art by Christian Ward, with artists Sami Kivela, Declan Shalvey, Ian Bertram, and Tula Lotay, and colorist Dee Cunniffe.

Bad Luck Chuck
Bad Luck Chuck is a comic about “Chuck,” a woman who can create “natural” disasters: fire, floods, and earthquakes, etc. The creative team, writer Lela Gwenn, artist Matthew Dow Smith, and colorist Kelly Fitzpatrick, provided a description of the project, and the editor asked for a Sal Bass inspired logo. They wanted something that would match the bold style of the artwork. I had the opportunity to explore with this logo project and create some unique fiery lettering.

The Roadie
A comic about hair metal, zombie-fighting rock roadies. What more could you ask for? This logo was so much fun! The creative team: writer Tim Seeley and artist/colorist/cover artist Fran Galán have an awesome sense of humor. They provided some classic 80’s hair metal logos as reference: Def Lepard and Ratt. They also provided a sketch with a guitar neck and spray painted gig cases. In the end the spray painted logo won.

Starship Down
A science-fiction comic about the origin of mankind from writer Justin Giampaoli, artist Andrea Mutti, and colorist Vladimir Popov. The creative team gave me a few different directions for the logo: 1950’s diner sign, sci-fi, and computer tech. After a few rounds they wanted something a bit more earthy and distressed that took up the top one third of the cover. We landed on custom sci-fi letter forms crumbling like rocks.
